Subject: 2010-2011 California State University, Chico Outstanding Teacher Award
The Faculty Recognition and Support Committee has selected Professor Masami Toku, Department of Art and Art History, to receive the 2010–2011 Outstanding Teacher Award. I am delighted to accept their recommendation.
Professor Toku came to CSU, Chico in 1999. She earned her PhD in art education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Professor Toku immediately brought an international perspective to the curriculum in the art department. As part of her curriculum, Professor Toku introduces Manga (graphic novels), a world-famous Japanese comic style. Her students learn how to include this international art style in K-12 arts curricula. A major international exhibition of original Shojo Manga (girl’s comics) began its tour in Chico in 2005 and traveled to nine sites in North America and fours sites in Japan. Professor Toku’s students assisted with the exhibition and are credited in the exhibition catalogue.
Serving as the coordinator and the advisor of Art Education students since 2003, Professor Toku is the link between the Art Education students and the credential program in the Department of Education. She plays an active role as a member of the conference Board of Directors for the InSEA (International Society for Education through the Arts). In 2008, she arranged for three CSU, Chico Art Education students and her colleague Professor Teresa Cotner to serve as English language editors for the InSEA Congress 2008 Proceedings. In 2007 and 2008, Professor Toku brought 25 teachers from Japan to learn about education systems at CSU, Chico and K-12 schools in the community.
Professor Toku connects with her students through her passion and her wealth of knowledge in Japanese art. Her students praise her knowledge, her organization, and her attitude in the classroom. She teaches as much from command of her discipline as the force of personal example.
It is for these accomplishments that I ask you to join me in congratulating our colleague Masami Toku, this year's recipient of the Outstanding Teacher Award.
ついでに2008年度NAEA(National Art Education Association)にて、その下部組織 USSEA (United State for Education through Art) Ziegfeld International Awardをいただいた時の盾。
